First-ever ‘Respect for Fish Day’ set for August 1st

A new holiday begins on August 1, and it’s all about honoring fish. Respect for Fish Day is an idea from In Defense of Animals (IDA), an international animal protection organization. Their campaign began as a way to bring awareness to the plight of fish.

With the support of around 250 wildlife rescues, health professionals, animal shelters, and other advocacy organizations, the IDA’s campaign is proving that it has plenty of allies. As such, Respect for Fish Day hopes to “develop a broad coalition devoted to protecting fish and to show the public that compassion for fish is a mainstream notion.”

“Fish are the planet’s most widely abused animals, but their suffering receives the least attention,” IDA stated on their campaign page.

Scientific evidence shows that, contrary to popular belief, fish do in fact feel pain. Despite this fact, fish are generally left unprotected by animal welfare legislation. IDA wants to see protections for fish:

Respect for Fish Day hopes to change this by making the general public and lawmakers realize that fish are deserving of the same compassion and protection granted to any other animal.”

Due to COVID-19 concerns, Respect for Fish Day will be an entirely virtual event, but there are still ways for people to get involved. IDA suggests writing a letter to the editor, posting on social media, or organizing a protest, among other actions. If you have an organization, you can also sign up to be an ally of the campaign.

This year’s Respect for Fish Day is dedicated to Regan Russell, the animal activist who lost her life in June while giving water to pigs that were on their way to be slaughtered.
