Charges filed against truck driver who killed animal activist Regan Russell

Canadian authorities have filed charges against the truck driver responsible for the death of animal activist Regan Russell. The man, who was the driver of a pig transport truck, is being charged with Careless Driving Causing Death, following Russell’s June 19th death.

At the time of her death, the 65-year old activist was outside Fearmans Pork in Burlington, Ontario. She was part of a group that was providing water to the pigs as they were transported to be slaughtered. It was then that the truck accelerated, striking and killing her in the process. Videos were taken at the scene, though they were allegedly confiscated by the police.

Now, with the filing of charges, fellow animal rights activists believe it is not enough. The Animal Save Movement is demanding the video be released so it can be independently reviewed.

“These charges are feeble and do not amount to justice for Regan. Enough is enough – how many more lives will be lost at the hands of Sofina and Fearmans before they agree to a safety policy?” asked Anita Krajnc, the co-founder of Animal Save Movement. “They’ve rejected these calls far too long and have Regan’s blood on their hands – we will not rest until Bill 156 is repealed.”

Russell was attending a vigil with Toronto Pig Save, following the recent passing of an ag-gag legislation in Ontario. Bill 156 bars activists from interacting with farm animals to document their abuse. This includes interfering with a motor vehicle transporting the animals or interacting directly with the animals without the prior consent of the driver.
