Move for Millions Challenge is Coming in June

Animal lovers are being challenged to raise money to help end the use of animals in science by walking, running or cycling 192km this June.

‘Move for the Millions’ is a global fundraising challenge for the world’s leading organisation working to end animal testing, Cruelty Free International.

It invites supporters to take action to help end animal testing, by completing 192km and raising $192 (or whatever their local currency is), representing the estimated 192 million animals used in science worldwide each year.

Supporters can walk, run, cycle, swim 192km, or choose their own alternatives, such as moving or completing a cruelty‑free activity or skill for 192 minutes a week. The challenge can be taken on individually or as part of a team with friends, family, colleagues, and companion animals.

With personalised fundraising pages, social media support, and a free sponsorship pack available, ‘Move for the Millions’ is an easy and active way to raise awareness and funds to help end animal testing everywhere and forever.

Cruelty Free International CEO, Michelle Thew, said: “I’m so excited to join ‘Move for the Millions’, and hope to see as many of our supporters as possible taking part around the world. Whether at home or on holiday, and individually or as part of a team, their support is invaluable. Every step, kilometre, or minute counts, and every action helps raise awareness and funds to fight for a cruelty-free world.

“It is shocking that we are still having to fight on behalf of animals in laboratories, and that animal testing continues to touch all of our lives – especially when advances in new non-animal testing methods should be helping us move away from using animals in science. People around the world have told us that they want animal testing to end, and events like ‘Move for the Millions’ can help our work to make that a reality.”

Cruelty Free International aims to create a world where nobody wants, or thinks that there is a need, to experiment on animals. The organisation believes that many non-animal testing methods are faster, cheaper and more accurate than animal testing.

Cruelty Free International estimated that, in 2015, at least 192.1 million animals were used for scientific purposes worldwide. This is the world’s most reliable figure to date. This includes nearly 80 million experiments on animals as well as millions of other animals who are killed for their tissues, used to breed genetically modified animal strains and bred but not used. The top 10 animal testing countries in the world are China (20.5 million) Japan (15.0 million), the United States (15.6 million), Canada (3.6 million), Australia (3.2 million), South Korea (3.1 million), the United Kingdom (2.6 million), Brazil (2.2 million), Germany (2.0 million) and France (1.9 million).

Animals are used in safety tests during the manufacture of many everyday and household products, including food, clothes, cosmetics, household cleaning products, fertilisers, paper, toys, fuels, plastics, furniture, carpets, electronic goods, paints and dyes. Animals used include dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and monkeys, as well as mice, rats, fish, birds and guinea pigs.
