Vegan pizza scores award at championship event in Italy

A vegan pizza from UK restaurant Purezza won a prestigious award at the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza — or World Pizza Championship — in Italy this week.

So, yeah. We guess you could say the place is kind of a big deal.

Called The Promised Land Pie, the pizza showcases ingredients like kale, tempeh and mushrooms, atop a beer-infused wholegrain crust. Yes, really. Beer and pizza all in one fresh-out-of-the-oven package. The dream, basically.

Prepared by Purezza’s head chef, Filippo Rosato, the pie won its award in the Pizza Classica category of the competition, which pitted it against animal-based pies, with results even Rosato himself didn’t expect. 

“To even be there as the first vegan pizzeria was an incredible experience,” he told The Independent. 

“But to have come away with one of the awards for the Pizza Classica category is more than I could ever have hoped for, and shows that vegan pizza isn’t just possible – it’s the future.”

All of the pizzas entered had to be prepared and cooked in a wood-fired oven, and ready for tasting in 12 minutes or less.

If only all pizzas came to fruition that fast.
