The best of vegan London

The vegan food scene in London is utterly over the top and spreads through multiple neighbourhoods of the seemingly endless city.

If you can handle the cost, and the crowds inherent with a metropolis such as this, you’re in for a good time. Granted, London is absolutely crawling with people, and is such a coveted travel destination that it’s kind of become a cliché, but for good reason.

If you’re not lucky enough to live there, this vibrant, lively, colorful, entrancing place is well worth a visit, especially for the gastronomical tourists among us, and vegans are no exception.

Here are a number of the city’s best vegan spots.

Purezza

Purezza

London’s Purezza is not only home to a pizza that was awarded one of London’s best, but might be the world’s best pizza, period.

The menu includes not only plant-based pies with house-made meats and cheeses, but a lovely selection of sides and delicious desserts. A highlight is a mac and (fake) cheese with that can’t-believe-it’s-vegan quality sure to impress your favorite non-convert.

Situated in the super trendy neighbourhood of Camden, Purezza is upscale enough to feel like an occasion but casual enough that you can roll up in your ripped jeans and Nickelback t-shirt and no one will get offended. At least not any more offended than people are by Nickelback on a day-to-day basis, anyway.

What the Pitta

What the Pitta

What the Pitta is the stuff of any kebab lover’s dream, no meat required. Really.

This place offers a basic menu and has perfected what it does — spiced seitan meat, creamy sauces and made-to-order wraps to die for.

Also, the baklava is a must-try. With a flakey, melt-in-your-mouth pastry layered with sweet, crystallised syrup, you won’t believe it’s free of butter and honey.

Prepare to be uncomfortably full because you simply can’t go without trying both.

Unity Diner

Unity Diner

Unity Diner stands out on this list as the only non-profit restaurant, which is reason enough to go, to be honest, but the food does not disappoint.

All of the profits from this newly opened spot go toward two good causes – animal rights organization Surge and a rescue sanctuary being developed on the outskirts of London.

The menu includes a wide variety of plant-based, modern takes on classic diner food, including dishes such as The Full English Breakfast and Loaded Fries.

A great option before or after a big night out, Unity Diner is the place to go if you want to roll up those sleeves and indulge for a cause. That said, it also offers healthy raw dishes and salads that are sure to energize you for whatever lies ahead.

CookDaily

Cookdaily

While this opinion may be a bit divisive, simply because Cookdaily is such a no-nonsense, no-frills eatery, it couldn’t be left off of this list.

Located in London Fields, this counter-service spot dishes out piping hot bowls of fusion dishes, many of which feature simple ingredients such as tofu, veggies and rice, but all of which are bursting with flavor.

This feature is dedicated to Chef Antonio Rucco, whose plant-based Italian spot Antonio’s Vegan Italian Kitchen was one of London’s best. It has unfortunately closed since the time of his recent and unexpected passing. His contribution has not been forgotten, nor has the warm, welcoming feel of his friendly neighborhood restaurant.
