Vegan whey protein…No whey!

Yvonne O'Halloran

The company Perfect Day claims to be the first to create vegan whey protein isolate. Whey is one of the main proteins that is found in dairy products and it is commonly seen in many supplements, protein, and meal replacement shakes. Perfect Day has begun using microflora to cultivate this whey protein without the use or involvement of any cows. They use what is called ‘precision fermenting’ and a specific kind of fungus to produce the whey protein isolate. The fungus is given the ‘blueprint,’ or genetic code, of the protein and is essentially ‘taught’ how to make it via fermentation: a natural process that many fungi and bacteria do. The carbon footprint of obtaining the protein isolate this way is tremendously smaller than the alternative which is harmful to the environment and obviously for the animals as well.

Perfect Day has partnered with other brands to bring unique products like vegan ice cream into the market. This vegan ice cream is akin to traditional ice cream and has a very similar texture and creaminess that sometimes lacks in other vegan ice creams. They have also partnered with California Performace co to create a protein powder featuring the protein isolate.

This is a huge step in the right direction as not everyone is ready to give up whey protein isolate and exchange it for plant-based options such as pea protein. It seems like a great alternative for non-vegans who want to transition or simply reduce their impact. Something that is for vegans and non-vegans alike. This could be the next thing to try for yourself or a great gift for the non-vegans in your life to give them a push in the right direction.
