Vegan powerlifter breaks state record for deadlift

Yvonne O'Halloran

Nick Squires has broken the previous record in California for the deadlift. The vegan athlete deadlifted a whopping 650.36 lb to beat the previous record of 633.82 lb.  Nick was competing at the California State Championships in Chino Hills last week when he took the record. Squires went vegan back in 2014, a year after training as a powerlifter. Since then he has competed in five open powerlifting competitions placing in three of them.

Squires states that he ‘wasn’t even sure if the two were compatible’ when he first went plant-based but stated he ‘couldn’t continue to eat animals’.
