Applewood area is a new no-dig, sustainable farm that is owned and operated by Jo Hull and her partner Dave Carney. Located just outside of the village of Bentley, Applewood acres is run with an eco-conscious attitude.

The farm has increased in popularity among the locals due to its delicious range of vegan goodies – from their sweet apple-based honey, tangy lemon curd and smoky plant-based bacon. Made in the onsite kitchen and sold at Suffolk Food Hall and farmers markets around the county, the products have proved a hit among all who have tried the products (both vegans and meat-eaters). They Also grow micro-greens, lettuces, and edible flowers without the use of chemical fertilisers.

Jo said in an interview with the East Anglian Daily Times.“When we went plant-based a few years ago, I found that honey and lemon curd were two things that I really missed. Our vegan honey is made with apple juice, and is sweet and runny, a bit like acacia honey. The lemon curd is completely dairy free, too, so it’s also suitable for vegans. Although we’ve actually found that it’s normally non-vegans who are buying these goodies!”

One of their customers commented saying ‘OH MY GOD!!! That honey is to die for!!! I am going to be a regular customer, that’s for sure! Tomorrow morning I will have my fried bacon. That’s probably going to blow my mind!’

The couples “no-dig” method means that only the outer leaves of lettuces are harvested, allowing the plant to grow back. This method allows them to harvest four or five times from a single head of lettuce before planting a new one.

Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, the farmer’s markets where they sell their goods are closed for now, but Hull and Carney have begun offering home deliveries across Bentley. They are also preparing the farm for summer, when social distancing may be relaxed. A flower and vegetable garden are already in the works.
