Vegan activists arrested after blockading McDonalds distribution centres

Several animal rights protesters have been arrested by police after blocking the entrances of numerous McDonald’s distribution centres for two days running.

The activists, part of the non-violient campaign group Animal Rebellion, used vehicles and bamboo structures to blockade depot centres in Hemel Hempstead, Basingstoke, Coventry and Greater Manchester, causing a shortage of menu items in some restaurants.

The reason for the protest was to urge the chain to accept responsibility for their part in the climate crisis caused by animal agriculture and become fully plant-based by 2025.

James Ozden, a spokesperson for Animal Rebellion said: “The meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet: causing huge amounts of rainforest deforestation, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing billions of animals each year,”

“The only sustainable and realistic way to feed ten billion people is with a plant-based food system. Organic, free-range and ‘sustainable’ animal-based options simply aren’t good enough.”

Nick More, renewable energy developer and fellow member of Amazon Rebellion, added: “McDonald’s and the wider animal agriculture industry is clearly responsible for huge levels of deforestation in the Amazon Basin and wider Pantanal region. Despite their apparent greenwashing, there is no transparency in their supply chain or independent audit sufficient to support their claims that they are not a driver of deforestation.”

Hampshire police officers arrested eight people on suspicion of aggravated trespass and a further six on suspicion of aggravated trespass, criminal damage and intimidating behaviour. They have been released on conditional police bail and will appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court next month.
