Vegan activist Regan Russell’s legacy lives on as PETA saves pigs from slaughter

On June 19th activist Regan Russell is believed to have been taking part in a vigil at Fearmans Pork slaughterhouse- a peaceful protest against animal cruelty, where she offered compassion and water to pigs at the end of their life. Tragically, she was struck and killed by a vehicle transporting pigs to slaughter.

Regan had been an animal advocate since 1979, using her voice to stand up against injustice. She regularly attended vigils with Toronto Pig Save and cared deeply about animal rights. Her last moments were spent fighting for what she believed in and showing kindness to the most vulnerable.

In honour of her memory, a staffer at PETA was able to persuade a farmer in Iowa to save two of his piglets that were soon destined for slaughter.

The pigs are affectionately named Regan and Russell and have found freedom at Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary, where they can live out their days peacefully.  Regan fought to raise awareness of animal suffering on farms and during transport- she would be delighted that two lives have been spared from this cruelty.

The piglets can now finally experience the kindness of humans like Regan, having been given a new life of freedom.
