UK council pledges to only serve plant-based options at events to combat climate crisis

The Enfield borough council in London UK will ban meat from its festivals and events from December this year, only serving vegan and vegetarian options.

The ban follows the announcement of the councils 2020 climate action plan to tackle the environmental emergency which is facing this planet.

Enfield Councillor Ian Barnes has stated: “The emergency is real and the action to remedy it must be local, national, and global. In response to rising awareness and justified protest, Enfield Council has declared a climate emergency.”

In addition to their commitment to serving plant-based meals only, the council has made further moves towards a sustainable future.

Barnes explained that the council aims to be carbon neutral by 2030 by reducing emissions and switching to renewable energy.

Agriculture is currently responsible for nine percent of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions so switching to vegan and vegetarian catering for all Enfield council events is a step in the right direction.
