The Martha Project helps the houseless go plant-based

Yvonne O'Halloran

Celebrity chef Nicole Derseweh founded a Los Angeles-based vegan organization called “The Martha Project” in 2019.

The organization has been committed to feeding LA’s houseless population by providing free vegan meals, and prefers the term “houseless” rather than “homeless”.

Derseweh says that she wants to be more inclusive when speaking about the houseless community, hence why she deters from using the word “homeless”.

LA had a huge surge of houseless community members during the pandemic, but with the help from doctors and nurses, Derseweh and her team were the first ones to get food, masks, and medical supplies to the houseless in LA.

The Martha Project not only brings a non-judgemental space for those who need help, but they even do it sustainably. The food they use and prepare is all donated and would be otherwise thrown out at the end of the day. The food is also packaged in environmentally friendly containers.

According to VegNews,The Martha Project has served over 6,000 vegan meals. Some of the food served includes mediterranean plates, stir-frys, and even full Thanksgiving meals.

Hopefully more organizations like The Martha Project pop up, showing that everyone can enjoy and benefit from plant-based meals.
