Taiwan to ban the fishing of endangered shark species

In a monumental move to preserve biological diversity, Taiwan’s Fisheries Agency has decided to ban the fishing of three endangered shark species- the great white, basking shark and rare megamouth shark.

In a statement released on July 15th, the government agency announced that they are set to ban Taiwanese fishing boats from catching these vulnerable species of shark, even by accident. In this case, the fisherman would be required by law to place the animals back into the water, whether dead or alive.

The new regulations follow measures to prohibit the fishing of whale sharks in 2008 and a ban on fishing giant oceanic manta rays in 2018.

Taipei-based environmental group, Environment and Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST) have been pushing for the government to bring about additional protection for endangered and vulnerable shark species.

EAST executive officer Chu Tseng-hung (朱增宏) has claimed that since the megamouth shark was discovered in 1976, only 226 have been recorded in the world as of June 17 this year. 146 of which were subsequently caught by fishermen in Taiwan.

Chu Tseng-hung added: “Saving megamouth sharks is of great urgency now,”

The agency is set to formally announce the ban this week.
