Students asking for universities to be 100% vegan UK
Following extensive outreach and education across the UK, the students of 20 campuses have asked that food provided by universities make a transition to being 100% plant-based by the start of the 2023 new school year.
Whilst it is not surprising that the youth of the UKs higher education facilities are seeing the science and acting, it is a wonder that the vegan movement is stalling in many other countries. Interest is being taken up in the Netherlands and Australia, but at a slower pace.
This finding is a call to university students everywhere, to stand up and change their streets before they go on to change the world. To be learning of climate collapse and sustainable development, whilst your university continues to serve animal products in single-use plastic, is quite mind boggling for the awakened advocates of our planet. So, the time has come to put our feet down and ask that all Universities lead by the utmost example when it comes to practicing what they preach.
A vegan diet is now firmly understood as the best way individuals can reduce their negative impact on the environment. This goes beyond greenhouse gas emissions, to also reducing land and water use. The pressure is now on governments to facilitate this transition to a more sustainable food system.
Whilst activists put pressure on governments to increase emission targets, the same should go for students in their universities. People & Planet have revealed that only 46% of UK universities are currently on track to meet their own reduction targets.
