Plant-based food is becoming more popular!

2020 was the year of many losses – but the one upside is that plant-based foods became more popular in the U.S. According to Supermarket News the sales of plant-based foods market doubled in 2020, making that a 27% increase.

The shutdown of most restaurants forced people to grocery shop and cook at home. With the shutdown, many people stocked up on food and household items in bulk. This left next to nothing for many people, so plant-based alternatives was the next in line for purchase.

The two main items that have been flying off the shelves are plant-based milks and plant-based meats.

Plant-based milks represent 35% of the sales, while plant-based meats are at 20%. The next most popular category is plant-based dairy products – butter, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, and creamers.

It was found that of U.S households, 18% of them purchased some form of plant-based meat in 2020. This is a 14% increase from 2019, and of those who bought plant-based meats, many of them were repeat/frequent shoppers.

Plant-based meats have been strategically placed next to animal meats in grocery stores, showing this creates a positive trend in sales. Interestingly, refrigerated plant-based meat sales have grown twice as much as frozen plant-based meats.

These positive trends are showing that consumers are becoming more acceptant of plant-based alternatives, creating more demand and awareness. Hopefully one day we will be able to see a mostly plant-based world.
