Well known animal rights organisation PETA has called for the closure of slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Using mobile billboards that are being driven around Dublin, the goal is to bring awareness to the situation for consumers and the government. The billboard reads: “No one needs to kill to eat. Close abattoirs and meat factories: save the workers, their families, and the animals”.

Meat factories have become hot spots for coronavirus in Ireland and overseas. One of the latest reports has found that around 800 workers have tested positive in 16 different meat factories around the country but facilities are still open. Rosderra Irish Meats in County Tipperary remains open, with one third of there workers having tested positive for Covid-19. According to The Guardian, Rosderra is the largest pork-processing company in Ireland.

The Dáil has heard how some 60 workers at Rosderra Meats Edenderry plant in Co Offaly had tested positive for the virus.Dawn Meats temporarily closed one of its plants following an outbreak of Covid-19.

PETA’s director, Elisa Allen, said: “A deadly disease that originated in a meat market is now sweeping through blood-soaked, offal-strewn meat-processing plants and endangering workers, their families, and the whole community,”

She goes on to say:“No one needs meat – that’s why PETA is calling for these filthy facilities to be shut down immediately, for everyone’s protection.”

The mobile billboard was parked outside the gates of Leinster House while TD’s debated the ongoing impact of Covid-19 in the Dail.
