Pandemic makes the vegan lifestyle more attractive to Brits

The Coronavirus pandemic has made a vegan diet more attractive to the British public, according to a new survey conducted by market research firm Mintel.

12% of the 2000 people surveyed stated that a vegan diet had become more appealing since the start of the pandemic, with this figure jumping to a huge 25% when looking at responses from the participants between the ages of 21 and 30.

The rationale behind this increase in interest is uncertain, but a more acute awareness of the environmental and ethical issues surrounding meat and the desire to boost health are thought to be factors.

Alex Beckett, the Associate Director of Mintel Food and Drink, stated: “For consumers struggling to know how to make a positive difference, cutting out animal protein may be seen as a way of tackling the climate crisis, showing compassion for nature, and boosting their own nutrient intake.”

He added: “Even before the spread of COVID-19, we were seeing a growing interest in plant-based food and drink across global markets. It may well be that the pandemic is accelerating this trend. For example, in China, we’ve seen skyrocketing sales of the new plant-based meat options in KFC and Pizza Hut.”
