Pamela Anderson calls on the UK to stop using real bearskin on Queen’s guard caps

Former Baywatch Pamela Anderson star has demanded Boris Johnson keep his promise he made when he backed calls to replace real bearskin on the Queens caps to faux fur.

The 54 year old animal rights activist wrote an open letter to the leader, saying it is “unconscionable” not to phase out the bearskins.

While he was Mayor of London in 2015, Boris stated that synthetic fur caps should be used if they would “help save a few bears”.

In the letter, Anderson noted that it takes the fur of one bear to make a single cap, highlighting that it would save more than “just a few bears”.

The Queen’s Guards have historically worn these ornamental hats for more than 200 years. According to LBC, the caps were designed to make troops appear taller and more intimidating during battle.

Now, many consider the headwear to be cruel and unnecessary. To Anderson, the use of them is “outrageous.

According to PETA, over the past seven years alone, the MoD has spent more than £1 million of taxpayers’ money on 891 bearskin caps, which are ornamental and serve no military purpose.

Anderson went on to say:

“As you probably know, it takes the fur of at least one bear – who was likely baited and gunned down – to make just one of these ornamental caps.

“Some of these bears are nursing mothers whose cubs will slowly die without them there to protect and care for them.

Mr Johnson, there is nothing more important for people in positions of power to do than protect the vulnerable”.
