Over 100 celebrities urge public to go vegan in January

Over 100 public figures – from actors to athletes to activists – have signed an open letter asking the public to go vegan in January and ideally beyond. The letter, which was published by Veganuary, has signatures from the likes of Edie Falco, Evanna Lynch, Ricky Gervais, Jane Goodall, and Paul McCartney, among others.

In the letter, the negative environmental impact of animal agriculture is the main talking point. It also emphasizes the relationship between animal agriculture and zoonotic diseases, such as swine flu and avian flu, arguing that the next pandemic could be the result of factory farms.

2020 has been an unforgettable year, with our attention divided between fears over coronavirus and anxiety over climate change,” the letter reads. “What has become increasingly obvious is that these two threats have something in common; both are heavily linked to our consumption of animal products.”

The letter states that to “protect our planet, its wild spaces, and the health and wellbeing of all its inhabitants,” something must be done about our diets.

“Catastrophic climate breakdown and global pandemics could not be more serious, but they are not inevitable. If we act now, the future can be better.”

Veganuary is a non-profit organization that encourages people around the world to pledge to go vegan in January. In 2020, 400,000 people took the Veganuary pledge.
