No more budget noodles – this university serves up free vegan lunches

You’re a student, you’re starving, you’ve eaten nothing but ramen and stale Cheerio knockoffs for the past week. Maybe you spent all your money on $10 pitchers or vegan Birkenstocks to wear over your stripy grey socks — whatever. The point is that you’re hungry.

Well, if you happen to go to Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie University, you’re in luck.

This Eastern Canadian college offers free vegan lunches multiple days a week, through a student-run, volunteer-driven program called The Loaded Ladle. Granted, the lines are long, but four days a week you can queue up in the college’s Student Union Building and enjoy a delicious, mostly local, plant-based meal at virtually no cost.

That said, a levy of $4.50 CAD per semester is included in the tuition costs of each student, but anyone who doesn’t intend to use the service can opt out at the beginning of the term. In a world where a single coffee can run you upwards of seven bucks, a meal that ends up costing you a few cents is about as close to free as it gets.

Aside from providing nutritious meals, and cutting costs for students, the organization is super eco-friendly. Food is dished up on real dishes, which are washed and reused, and students who bring their own containers get to skip the line.

All the better for getting you to class in time, so you can you can swipe through Tinder while you’re supposed to be taking notes. Yeah, we see you Top Knot.
