New Volkswagen electric car boasts vegan ‘AppleSkin’ interior

Volkswagen has debuted a designed-to-be roomy new SUV that replaces animal-based leather finishes with an alternative called AppleSkin — whatever that is.

Kidding. We know what it is, obviously, and we’re going to share that information with you. That’s kind of what we do here.

The specially designed material is not only vegan, but made in part from the leftovers of apple juice production — product that might otherwise go to waste. Is there anything more vegan than leather made from apples? Okay, maybe Moby’s more vegan than leather made from apples, but it’s still pretty legit.

New Volkswagon Interior

Volkswagen is by no means the first automotive giant to debut a vehicle with a pointedly non-leather interior of late. Czech brand Skoda, for example, rolled out an SUV offering a specially designed microfiber, dubbed Suedia, earlier this year. You can make your own assumptions about what it’s meant to resemble.

While Volkswagen’s SUV — appropriately dubbed the ID Roomzz  — was debuted at the Shanghai auto show this week, it’s not anticipated to go to market until 2021, so you can keep those pineapple leather wallets closed for now.
