New report shows nearly one quarter of Americans are eating plant-based meats

A new report from Packaged Facts, a market research firm, shows that a growing number of Americans are taking an interest in plant-based meats, regardless of their overall diet and lifestyle. In the report, which is titled “Meat, Poultry & Seafood Alternatives: Outlook for Plant-Based & Cultured Cell-Based Consumer Products,” the firm found that 23% of American consumers have tried vegan meat alternatives.

What’s the driving force behind consumers testing out plant-based options? The report says health concerns. People perceive plant-based meat products as being healthier than their animal-derived alternatives. As American consumers look to improve their diet and health, they tend towards plant-based meats, which has increased the sale of these products.

Apart from health issues, consumers cite concerns about climate change and sustainability, as well as the increase in news coverage about animal abuse in the farming industry. Both issues are causing Americans to consider just where the food comes from and what impact it is having on the world.

Since 37% of consumers who are not currently eating vegan meat are still interested in trying such products, the report presents an opportunity for food brands, says Jennifer Mapes-Christ, the food and beverage publisher at Packaged Foods. “There are opportunities to target this burgeoning minority of consumers, who may be persuaded to use larger volumes of plant-based meat in their diets,” said the publisher.

Mapes-Christ even sees potential in the other three quarters of Americans who aren’t eating meatless alternatives. “The 77 percent of consumers who do not eat plant-based meat products also suggests that marketers have a lot of room to increase penetration among the population.”
