Meatless Monday program to launch at New York City public schools

Meatless Mondays, a vegetarian school lunch program, is soon to hit all New York City public schools.

The initiative, which was previously trialed in Brooklyn, was announced today by Mayor de Blasio, and will come into effect citywide in the 2019/2020 school year.

De Blasio explained that this a project he takes very personally, due in part to the fact that he has two children who are vegetarian. He also cited environmental, animal welfare and health issues as reasons for the change, which he added is one he “can believe in”.

The mayor also invited Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams to speak, who is a longtime advocate for plant-based diets. The ex-police officer famously dropped 30 pounds and turned his health around by switching to a vegan regime.

Now, Adams says we should look to the science — namely data from the World Health Organization which classifies processed meat as a class one carcinogen — for answers on how to feed our children.

“If we open our minds and allow the creativity of how to eat healthy, you will find that our children will embrace this,” he said.

“We are in the way.”

Imagine that level of accountability from people in politics. Maybe hope’s not lost after all.

Now, if only it were contagious.
