McDonald’s Is working on plant-based menu items

Fast food lovers can rejoice: McDonald’s has a plant-based burger, and likely other meatless menu items, in the works. The company hopes to begin testing these new products – dubbed McPlant items – in some markets starting next year.

According to USA Today, Ian Borden, the international president of the company, spoke about future plant-based options at an investor meeting. “In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches,” he said.

First, McDonald’s will tackle creating their own vegan burger. The McPlant burger “delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich.” It will be served on a wam sesame seed bun with all the toppings you expect from a McDonald’s burger.

Unlike competitors like Burger King, McDonald’s isn’t relying on brands like Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods to supply a meatless patty. Instead, they will be making its own burger and will do the same for the rest of the McPlant menu.

With Burger King having introduced its Impossible Whopper in 2019, McDonald’s is behind on the plant-based phenomenon in the United States. However, this isn’t the fast food giant’s first foray into vegan cuisine. 2019 saw McDonald’s introduce a vegan burger in Germany, and the company previously used Beyond Meat for plant-based burgers sold in Canada, which stopped being sold this year.
