Matthew Kenney to launch vegan sushi pop-up in San Francisco

Vegan chef Matthew Kenney is teaming up with Kyle and Tracy Vogt with a new vegan popup in San Francisco this summer. Woodblock is a “plant-based Japanese concept,” which will offer sushi rolls, in addition to vegetables and bowls. The new restaurant promises that customers will enjoy their “favorite rolls reinvented with unique ingredients and sophisticated preparations.”

Woodblock’s sample menu features classic sushi dishes with a Matthew Kenney twist. Some possible items you can order are the Truffle Explosion Roll, the Nashville Hot Karaage Roll, and Asparagus Tempura. Ingredients include hearts of palm, red and golden beets, and the Just Egg.

Due to COVID-19, Woodblock will be offering delivery and takeout 7 days a week from 4:00pm until 10:00pm. The popup will have other safety measures in place, ensuring that waiting parties will maintain a distance of 6 feet. Staff must wear masks and gloves, undergo training, wash their hands every 30 minutes, and go through a wellness check before each shift.

This isn’t Kenney’s first collaboration with the Vogts. They previously partnered up to launch BAIA, a plant-based Italian restaurant currently offering takeout and delivery in the Hayes Valley neighborhood in San Francisco. Woodblock and BAIA will share the same location.

Kenney is one of the world’s top plant-based chefs and has authored 12 cookbooks and a best-selling memoir. He was named one of Food and Wine’s America’s Best New Chefs and has opened restaurants all over the world, from New York City’s Double Zero to Sydney, Australia’s Alibi.
