KFC is working on lab-grown chicken nuggets

KFC is currently working on a more ethical version of their famous fried chicken. According to a recent press release, the famous American fast food chain is attempting to create the “restaurant of the future” by developing 3D-printed, lab-grown meat. For this project, KFC is collaborating with the 3D Bioprinting Solutions research laboratory. They plan to test the final product in Moscow in the fall of 2020.

Growing interest in meat alternatives and environmental concerns were part of what inspired the company’s decision. Cell-based meat products have several advantages. Not only do they have a smaller negative impact on the environment, but they cause no harm to any actual animals, making them a much more ethical alternative to the average chicken nugget.

While 3D Bioprinting Solutions will handle the technology, which will reproduce the texture and taste of real chicken, KFC will provide the ingredients needed to create their signature flavor, including spices and breading.

“Our experiment in testing 3D bioprinting technology to create chicken products can also help address several looming global problems,” said Raisa Polyakova, the General Manager of KFC Russia & CIS.

Unfortunately, this experiment won’t be vegan or vegetarian: these chicken nuggets will still contain animal products, as it will be produced using chicken cells and plant material. However, as scientists continue to work on this project, we could see a completely vegan version in the future.
