Grocery Store may have answer to Plastic Bags

A Canadian Grocery store has gone a step further in trying to eliminate plastic bag usage by its customers.

East-West groceries in Vancouver, still allows customers to buy plastic bags if they don’t bring their own reusable ones – but the cost is steep. Not in dollars but in embarrassment.

The five-cent bags all have unique labels like “Colon Care Co-op” written in large letters on the side, and “Weird Adult Video Emporium” or “Wart Ointment Wholesale.”

The store is hoping the message gets out, well the message of a greener society not the message on the bags.

GlobalTV talked to store owner Davis Lee Kwen who hopes this strategy gets his customers using reusable bags “The message is, we should make a conscious effort to save our planet one step at a time,” adding “Plastic bags are a big problem, and every step helps.”

People Starting To Collect Bags

If there is a downside, some customers are coming in to “BUY” the limited edition bags for the novelty factor. But Kwen believes with the coverage this has created, it may help start a bigger conversation “It’s certainly generated interest in what we’re trying to put out,” Kwen says “and once you start a conversation, it will skyrocket from there, I think.”

Vancouver council has considered a plastic bag ban, but a law has not passed. Meanwhile, Victoria on Vancouver Island has a ban in place, which has drastically cut usage.
