Free Solo climbing champ Alex Honnold says he’s “dabbled with vegan-hood”

Turns out Alex Honnold, pro climber and subject of Free Solo, the film that won the Oscar for best documentary last night, identifies as a vegetarian who’s “dabbled with vegan-hood”.

Honnold discussed his meat-free tendencies during a 2018 episode of vegan athlete Rich’s Rolls famed podcast, noting that his choices are primarily motivated by sustainability and health.

He also gave the scoop on his diet in a 2015 interview with Munchies, in which he refers to bacon and eggs as “just gross”, and can be seen dining on muesli and shopping for nondairy milk and nut butter — palm oil free, of course.

“I just feel like people should be more mindful of the impact that their diet has,” he said.

All of this said, we can’t say that ditching meat will enable you to free climb upwards of 3,000 feet without falling to your death, so maybe don’t try this at home. Or in Yosemite National Park.
