Former sheep farmer sends lambs to animal sanctuary instead of slaughterhouse

Sheep farmer Sivalingam Vasanthakumar described how he was en-route to the slaughterhouse with a flock of males lambs when he had a change of heart and instead drove them to an animal sanctuary. Vasanthakumar said he was so upset at the thought of sending his flock of lambs to slaughter that he made the decision to drive 200 miles to Goodheart Animal Sanctuaries in Milson.

Vasanthakumar, who resides in the UK (and is originally from Sri Lanka) was a farmer for 47 years and described how he began to feel increasingly uncomfortable with his career choice due to the suffering the animals experienced.

I started off on a dairy farm, but found the practice of separating mothers from their newborn calves too distressing.” He goes on to say “After that, I switched to sheep farming, but the issue go killing animals still played on my mind. I used to unload sheep at the abattoir and saw first-hand how they’d huddle in terror in the back of the lorry. They knew what was going to happen.”

Mr Vasanthakumar made the decision to stop animal farming and Goodheart Animal Sanctuaries was able to re-home his group of 20 male lambs there they will spend the rest of their days living in a 91-acre sanctuary.

Vasanthakumar is now looking into selling vegetable-based cuisine in Devon where he lives and has since gone Vegetarian. His plan is to open a plant-based cafe in the near future.
