Flash Forest’s Drones will plant 1 billion trees by 2028

Flash Forest consists of a group of scientists that modify drones to shoot tree seeds into the soil. Drones allow for the fastest planting rate to keep up with the rate of deforestation. The Canadian startup company behind this genius project plans to use the technology to plant 40,000 trees in the area of Toronto this month. They are planning to expand to other regions by the end of the year where it will plant hundreds of thousands of trees. The company has a long term goal of 1 billion trees by 2028. Their next target area is Hawaii, where they plan on planting 300,000 trees.

This company, along with other tree planting drones, is aiming to restore forests and fight climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that we need to plant 1 billion hectares of trees to limit the global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. That is equivalent to the size of the United States of America.

Along with this goal, it is important that existing forests are protected as we are currently seeing a loss of about 7 billion trees per annum as stated by Flash Forest Cofounder Angelique Ahlstrom. Flash Forest’s technology can currently plant 10,000 to 20,000 seed pods per day.

We are all hoping they meet their goal, for the sake of our planet and for the long term survival of all species on earth.
