Five vegan ultra-endurance athletes that’ll get you off the couch

Maybe you planned to start running in January and never made it off the couch. Maybe you get winded when you get to the top of the stairs. Maybe you just want to be able to run away from Christmas dinner when your family won’t stop asking you questions about veganism.

One way or another, if you’re looking to up your cardio game, these five athletes are sure to get you inspired.

Rich Roll

Rich Roll

Named the world’s fittest vegan by Men’s Health Magazine, Rich Roll is an obvious choice for this list. His super-lean, ultra-fit, green-juice-chugging, over-40 self puts most 20 year olds to shame.

Roll is a podcast host, author and over-the-top ultra-endurance athlete. Among the craziest races completed by Roll is the Epic5, a challenge which required him to complete five Ironman-length races over the course of a week. He’s also been a finisher in two Ultraman World Championships.

That half-marathon doesn’t seem worth bragging about anymore, does it Brenda?

Fiona Oakes

Fiona Oakes

Fiona Oakes is a world-renowned ultra-endurance athlete, known in particular for the races she’s done in extreme environments. In fact, this cardio champion completed a 250km race through the Sahara Desert, and holds the title of fastest woman to complete the Antarctic Ice Marathon.

Did I mention she lost a kneecap when she was 17, runs an animal sanctuary and, like Roll, is over the age of 40?

For some people, standing up can seem like a chore. Then there’s Oakes, who’s said she doesn’t need a sofa because she never sits down. If you’d like to keep the inspo going, don’t forget to check out Running For Good, the Fiona Oakes documentary from Cowspiracy and What the Health Co-Director Keegan Kuhn.

Catra Corbett

Catra Corbett

Having given up a life of drinking and drugs for raw veganism, author and runner Catra Corbett is one of only four people in the world to have run 100 miles more than 100 times. She’s also completed more than 250 ultra-marathons.

Incidentally, Corbett is also over 50. There seems to be a common thread here. Surely, this’ll get at least one of our young readers to stop scrolling and hit the pavement.

Scott Jurek

Scott Jurek

Much like Corbett and Roll, Scott Jurek’s fitness story is remarkable enough to warrant him writing a book about it — which happened to be a New York Times bestseller. Among his most remarkable feats is his record-breaking speed on the Appalachian Trail, where he ran more than 50 miles a day. Every day. For 46 days. He also once completed the equivalent of six-and-a-half marathons in a 24-hour period.

Imagine how much money this guy could make running a rickshaw! Okay, probably not that much. But he could get you from point A to point B pretty fast.

John Joseph

John Joseph

Triathlete John Joseph is not a man easily forgotten. Having come from an extremely difficult, violent childhood and eventual incarceration, Joseph is no stranger to redemption. His is a remarkable story of will, determination and, in his words, positive mental attitude.

Joseph has completed more than 10 Ironman races and advocates for a plant-based diet for top performance. Make no mistake though, this punk-music legend wants you to know that he’s not a tree hugger or ‘hippy granola eater’ — whatever that means.
