Five sweet and savory chickpea recipes almost as good as hummus

Hummus is a dish undoubtedly standing the test of time in food scenes around the world. This savory staple is no flash-in-the-pan, fish and Jell-O pie of the 1950s (goodbye and good riddance).

With its perfect combination of tahini, chickpeas, lemon and garlic, this dip/spread/main serves as a tasty staple in any diet, vegan or otherwise. But the chickpea is no one-trick pony. In fact, it’s just as versatile as it is delicious, well-deserving of its time as the star of another show.

So, in celebration of this hearty legume in all its glory, five amazing chickpea recipes, other than hummus, follow.

Actually Crispy Baked Chickpeas

Actually Crispy Baked Chickpeas — The Minimalist Baker

A simple, savory snack, baked chickpeas are a great thing to keep around for packed lunches, salad toppers and mindless eating episodes in front of the latest season of Game of Thrones. Shame, shame, ding, ding, ding.

With only four ingredients and an oil-free option, this recipe from The Minimalist Baker keeps this snack as easy to prepare as it is to Hoover while The Mother of Dragons steals the show in yet another edge-of-your-seat episode.

Healthy Cookie Dough

Healthy Cookie Dough Dip — Chocolate Covered Katie

Chocolate Covered Katie’s mostly healthy vegan cookie dough recipe has been massively popular since its release, and with good reason.

Alongside simple ingredients you can feel good about, like chickpeas, nut butter and flaxseed meal, chocolate chips become a negligible dietary offense, right? Life is meant to be enjoyed, after all.

Share this delicious dip with guests at your next potluck or family party and, for the love of God,  don’t tell them it’s vegan until they’ve tried it.

Vegan Chana Masala

Vegan Chana Masala — Lazy Cat Kitchen

A classic chickpea dish, the Vegan Chana Masala from Lazy Cat Kitchen is a rich, savory meal perfect for a fall or winter night.

This nutrient-rich recipe is super filling, and an easy-to-assemble crowd-pleaser when paired with brown or white rice. If you can manage to whip up a vegan naan to go with it, you’ll have a meal guests won’t quickly forget. Nor will you, so no judgement if you opt out of sharing entirely.

Chocolate Hummus: Yum! This chocolate hummus recipe is a revelation. We’ll admit, when we first heard of chocolate hummus we had our doubts. Why change what is fundamentally one of the greatest dips, ever? Hummus is already staple recipe in so many vegan households, so we approached this with caution. But trust us, this totally works. Tahini is a surprisingly versatile ingredient and, along with the chickpeas, these two ingredients match perfectly with the sweetness from the maple syrup and the bitterness from the cocoa powder. We’ll often recreate this recipe when we’re looking for sweet snack. We serve it with pretzels or simple spread it on toast. Enjoy! The full recipe is available now on our website or via our YouTube channel (link in bio). Chocolate Hummus — So Vegan

Alright, so this one is hummus. But it’s also chocolate, so how can it go wrong?

While garlic for chocolate is a tough trade-up, this simple dip is the perfect way to pack in some nutrition while satisfying that sweet tooth of yours.

No judgement if you skip the dipping bit and go straight for the spoon.
