Dutch fur farms have killed one million mink to prevent the spread of COVID-19

In an effort to control coronavirus, the dutch government has killed one million farmed mink to date.

Covid-19 has so far been detected in 24 mink farms across the Netherlands. The source of the spread is thought to have been passed to humans by mink, leading to the decision to ‘cull’ thousands of the infected animals.

The devastating numbers are matched by a recent announcement from Spanish authorities. News has broke that nearly 100, 000 mink are set to be killed at a farm in Spain after seven staff members and the majority of the animals tested positive for coronavirus. The mass cull is said to be a preventative measure to ensure public safety.

Animal rights charity Humane Society International has commented that the spread of infection amongst mink is a ‘compelling reason’ to ban this cruel industry.

The Dutch government had previously announced plans to permanently close all 128 mink farms by 2024, however, the severity of the current situation has urged a decision to made much sooner. Following the spread of COVID-19 and mounting pressure from animal rights groups, the Dutch parliament voted in favour of bringing to date of closure forward. The final decision is set to be announced in August 2020.
