Doctors who are advocating a plant-based lifestyle

The evidence is mounting year after year about the benefits of a whole food plant-based diet to prevent, treat and even reverse common diseases. Living a vegan lifestyle can face a lot of backlash (though this is slowly changing) from a society who believes that this way of living is unnatural and even dangerous. It’s important that these inaccurate beliefs are proven wrong so that people can feel confident and encouraged to step into this way of living.

These wonderful plant-based doctors have done so much for the vegan movement by providing scientific studies and evidence about the amazing benefits a plant-based diet can have. The standard American diet that is typically high in animal products, sugar and salt has been found through research to be damaging to our health and leads to many chronic and degenerative diseases. Although this list is not conclusive, it highlights many well known plant-based physicians and some of our favourites.

Dr Dean Ornish, MD

Dr Dean Ornish demonstrated that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery! Medicare even created a new benefit category called “intensive cardiac rehabillitation” to provide coverage for the program. He is the founder of the non -profit Preventative Medicine Research Institute and he directed the first randomised controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may slow, stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer. His research showed that lifestyle changes affect gene expression by turning on diseasee preventing genes and turning off genes that promote cancer and heart disease. He is currently directing the first randomised controlled trial to determine if lifestyle changes can reverse the progression of early Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr Neal Barnard, MD, FACC

Neal Barnard established the physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) to promote preventative medicine, conduct clinical research and advocate for higher ethical standards. Dr Barnard works with patients with diabetes, obesity and other chronic conditions in his clinical research aiming to improve prevention and treatment of these conditions. He is a physician, clinical researcher, and author of 20 books. He also authored over 90 scientific publications and has had a positive influence on the addition of plant-based nutrition in dietary guidelines for Americans.

Dr Michael Greger, MD. FACLM

Dr Greger is the creator of nutrition facts.org, a non-commercial, non-profit, science-based public service that offers daily updates on the latest in nutrition research primarily through short videos and articles. These are uploaded daily and are completely free to everyone to watch. He is also a physician, author and internationally recognised speaker on nutrition, food safety and public health issues.

Dr Michael Klaper, MD

Dr Klaper is a clinician, internationally recognised teacher, and sought-after speaker on diet and health. He has produced numerous health videos, webinars and articles for the plant-based movement. Dr Klaper believes health comes from healthy living and is dedicated to educating everyone on how a plant-based diet can change their health for the better. He educates other physicians and healthcare professionals about the importance of nutrition in clinical practice. He is also an author and has contributed to the making of two PBS television programs- Food for Thought and Diet for a New America movie.

Dr T. Colin Campbell, PhD

Dr Campbell has focused his 60 years of study into the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. His legacy, the china project, is one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted. The New York Times has recognised this study as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology”. He published a book with his findings called The China Study: Startling implications for Diet, Weight Loss and long-Term Health which has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. He is the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate in partnership with eCornell. He has authored over 300 research papers, and actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy. His findings have been featured in several documentary films and is the author of the New York Times bestseller: Whole and the low-Carb Fraud.

Dr Scott Stoll, MD

Dr Stoll in the co-founder of the Plantrician Project, the International Plant-Based Nutrition Healthcare Conference, the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, and the Regenerative Health Institute. He serves on the advisory board at Whole Foods for their healthcare clinics. Dr Stoll hosts a one week health immersion called Dr. Stoll’s Total Health Immersion in Naples, Florida to help people overcome poor health and/or addictions. He has also been featured in numerous documentaries such as The game Changers and Eating You Alive and is a highly sought-after International speaker.

Dr Caldwell Esselstyn, MD

Dr Esselstyn is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He has over 150 scientific publications and in 1995 he published his benchmark long-term nutritional research arresting and reversing coronary artery disease in severely ill patients. In 2014 he reported the response his 198 patients had on a whole foods plant-based diet who had severe cardiovascular disease. During the almost 4 year follow up, 99.4% avoided any further major cardiac events.

Dr Joel Fuhrman, MD

Dr Fuhrman is a board certified family physician who specialises in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional methods. Dr Fuhrman coined the term “Nutritarian” to describe a nutrient dense eating style , designed to prevent cancer, slow aging and extend lifespan. He has shown that it is possible to reverse heart disease, diabetes and many other illnesses using smart nutrition. He is the author of several books and is the President of the Nutritional Research Foundation. He has appeared on the Dr. Oz show, The Today Show, Live with Kelly, and Good Morning America.

Dr William Li, MD

Doctor Li is the president, medical director and co-founder of the Angiogenesis Foundation. He has actively been involved in angiogenesis research and clinical development for 22 years which gives a great insight into how we can maintain a healthy angiogenesis in the body as too much angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels) can lead to disease such as cancer growth, endometriosis, and alzheimers and too little can lead to issues such as stroke, hair loss, and chronic wounds. His work has demonstrated how a whole foods plant-based diet can keep angiogenesis in balance and has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. His TED Talk “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer ?” has had over 11 million views and appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Voice of America , TIME and The New York Times. He is also the author of over 100 scientific publications.
