Doctors urge USDA to remove dairy from 2020-2025 dietary guidelines

12,000 doctors from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) are calling on the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to recommend that the U.S Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services warn Americans about the dangers of dairy products and health problems they may cause like heart disease, cancer and lactose intolerance.

As the PCRM states, there is a mountain of evidence that highlights how cows milk and other dairy products increases the risk for breast, ovarian, prostate cancer, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and early death. It has also been demonstrated that dairy may offer little (or even no) protection to bone health (though many believe the contrary).

Charity called Switch4Good is also recommending America gets rid of dairy from the food guide for Americans. This charity is supported by well-known athletes supporting the ‘ditch the dairy’ initiative.

As Switch4Good states on their website: “A dairy-free lifestyle has the power to make you feel fantastic, now and in the long-term future. Expect to experience increased energy, less bloating, improved digestion, clearer skin, reduced asthma symptoms, less inflammation, and other lasting health benefits when you make the Switch4Good.”

Remember calcium can be found in a variety of plants such as beans, peas & lentils,  leafy green vegetables, tofu and other soy products, seaweed, breads, cereals, blackstrap molasses along with calcium fortified plant milks and other foods.

In January, Canada’s new food guide recommended that Canadians make water their “drink of choice” and took dairy out of their guidelines.
