Dairy council boss claims veganism won’t last as it’s “expensive and restrictive”
The CEO of Ireland’s National Dairy Council, Zoe Kavanagh, has said that veganism is too expensive and restrictive to stick.
Despite a reported 40% increase in the sales of plant-based foods in the country, Ms Kavanagh insists that the movement will not last.
“I don’t think it’s forever,” she said.
“We all know people who have tried the vegan diet but have dropped it because it is too expensive and that there are too many restrictions.”

She went on to discuss the conflict between vegan and pro-dairy campaigns. Vegans have used the month of January to promote a plant-based diet in recent years through the Veganuary campaign, and farmers have used February to promote dairy products through Februdairy
“The danger with Veganuary and Februdairy is that it will turn into a tit-for-tat debate,” she said.
“We have to remember, if it was a true debate, we would win hands down every day of the week. The dairy industry has to set its own agenda and take the lead.”
We are unsure what Ms Kavanagh meant by this, or what a debate that is not tit-for-tat would look like. Isn’t that just a monologue?
