Cigarettes harm the environment, can smokeless alternatives help reduce the damage?

Yvonne O'Halloran

The campaign against smoking has primarily centered around the adverse health effects of cigarettes, but their environmental impact isn’t as widely discussed. An MDPI environmental review highlights that cigarette butts can leach contaminants into soil, water, and air, and smoking them can cause air contamination from sidestream, exhaled, and thirdhand pathways. These toxins threaten the wellness of ecosystems, biodiversity, and humans.

With more awareness of cigarettes’ impact on health and the environment, more products are emerging to counter the effects of smoke and tobacco. Smokeless alternatives are increasing in popularity due to the reduced-risk nicotine experience they offer. Many smokers find it difficult to quit due to cravings and withdrawal, but these products help manage those issues without them turning to cigarettes or other smoking products. Here’s more on how smoking impacts the environment and how smokeless alternatives can help manage the damage:

Cigarettes and the environment

Cigarettes are a significant pollutant for land, water, and air. This report from the University of Gothenburg notes that an estimated 4.5 trillion cigarettes with filters are smoked and butted every year. Because 65% of these butts aren’t disposed of in a waste bin or ashtray, cigarette filters have become the world’s most common form of litter. Even if they’re thrown on land, the toxins and plastic fibers in these filters can make their way to and contaminate waterways, threatening marine life like aquatic larvae, marine mammals, and fish. The plight of many of these animals often goes overlooked and letting the harm go unaddressed can lead to dwindling ecosystems. Read Living Vegan’s previous post here to learn more about the importance of respecting and caring for fish, which are often unprotected.

Many cigarettes are also not vegan, as they contain animal products, and some manufacturers use animal testing. Animals like dogs, rats, and mice have been tested on to see the effects of smoke, and while testing on animals is no longer required, many places in the world still don’t have an outright ban on animal testing. How smokeless alternatives can shift the tides

Now that more people are conscious of their environmental footprint, they have more reasons to quit smoking. However, quitting often comes with cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making the journey harder. Smokeless alternatives emerged as a way for people to manage these urges without the harmful impacts of smoke and tobacco. Their growing popularity may play a role in reducing the number of cigarettes being smoked and disposed of. Some alternatives also contain synthetic nicotine, which is manufactured in a lab and not derived from the tobacco plant, which is promising for decreasing tobacco farming’s damage. Such is the case for Zanoprima synthetic nicotine

Nicotine pouches are one of the fastest-growing alternatives thanks to being smoke and tobacco-free. They don’t produce smoke nor contain tobacco, making them a reduced-risk product for the environment. The diverse flavors from various brands can also make their use more appealing than smoking cigarettes. Standard tastes include mint, citrus, and coffee, but brands including Juice Head nicotine pouches offer exotic tropical flavors like peach pineapple mint and blueberry lemon mint, which can appeal to consumers looking for a more vibrant experience. These pouches also come in 6 and 12mg strengths, which can further personalize them to the user’s tastes. The variety and versatility of pouches may potentially help deter cigarette use, which can reduce their presence in landfills and bodies of water.

Nicotine lozenges are also another top smokeless alternative and are approved for smoking cessation. Lozenges are also one of the more environmentally friendly options, as they dissolve in the mouth and don’t need to be disposed of after use. Brands like Nicorette offer lozenges in 2 and 4mg strengths and come in a refreshing mint flavor. They provide a quick fix for cravings and help manage and reduce cigarette consumption, which can help minimize their use and presence in the environment. Visit this prediction from Verified Market Reports to learn more about nicotine lozenges and how they will grow in the coming years.

There’s a long way to go to reducing the impact of cigarettes on the environment, but smokeless alternatives may provide promising avenues to veer people away from smoking. Fewer cigarettes being smoked and disposed of can reduce the amount of toxins in land, water, and air, making the world a safer place for all kinds of life.
