Chicken wars: better naked weighs in to support Ukraine

Some think it originated in Russia, and was perfected by a Ukrainian chef. The French, apparently, claim it as theirs. And a British supermarket says it was honed by one of their staff in the 1970s.

Love it or loathe it, the chicken Kiev, chicken stuffed with butter and covered with breadcrumbs, is claimed by many. Though vegans like theirs plant-based.

“Was it invented in Kiev, Moscow, Paris…or the backroom of a British Supermarket?” asks Ethan Croft of The Economist.

To support the brave people of Ukraine, defending against the vicious war waged by Russia’s Vladimir Putin, UK food producer for Finnebrogue & owner of the brand Better Naked , has renamed its plant-based chicken dish.

“All our hearts go out to the Ukrainian people as they defend their homeland and stand up for the principles of self-determination and free, liberal democracy.

“So many of us in the UK feel utterly helpless, but are still determined to do what little we can. That’s why Finnebrogue are donating to the humanitarian effort ,” says Chief Strategy officer Jago Pearson.

Better Naked, has renamed its plant-based chicken dish to chicken Kyiv, from the old-style Kiev, in solidarity with the Ukrainian people who are bravely defending their country from Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

Kiev’ was the standardised spelling for the Ukrainian capital under Soviet rule, but Russian aggression has seen more Western institutions heed calls to abandon it in favour of the Ukrainian alternative Kyiv.

Finnebrogue has also pledged 50% of profits from sales of the Better Naked Kyiv in 2022 to the humanitarian relief effort in Ukraine, starting with an immediate £10,000 donation to UNICEF and the Red Cross.

http://www.unicef/ UNICEF boss Catherine Russel says the organisation is ramping up support across the country as families seek safety and refuge. Hundreds of thousands of women and children are feeling to neighbouring countries in freezing conditions.

The http://www.redcross/ International Committee of the Red Cross is responding by providing food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter.

The world is appalled by the disgraceful events being perpetrated by the Putin regime in Ukraine,” adds Pearson.
