Celebrities pledge to go turkey-free this Thanksgiving

With American Thanksgiving fast-approaching, a lot of people are thinking about turkey. While non-vegans are thinking about all the turkey they’re going to consume on November 26, vegans are more likely to worry about the animal cruelty behind the holiday.

With this in mind, Farm Sanctuary, America’s first shelter for farm animals, has launched the Turkey-Free Pledge, which urges Americans to forgo turkeys this holiday season. A group of celebrity activists, including Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Alec Baldwin, Sia, and Edie Falco, among others, have all signed this year’s pledge.

The Turkey-Free Pledge reads, “I object to animal cruelty, environmental destruction, and exploitation of slaughterhouse workers, and the deep wounds inflicted upon rural communities by factory farming. As such, I will join Farm Sanctuary in celebrating a compassionate Thanksgiving by leaving turkey off my dinner plate.”

Some celebrities have taken the pledge even further. Sadie Sink, an actress best known for her role as Max on Netflix’s Stranger Things, announced she will be adopting a turkey through Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-a-Turkey Project. In a video released by Farm Sanctuary, Sink said “I hope this holiday season, instead of supporting this destructive factory farming industry, I hope you guys will join me in celebrating the lives of turkeys by adopting Jackie, Sandy, Tutu, Ferris, or Venus,” all of which are rescued turkeys now at the animal sanctuary.

If you want to help prevent the slaughter of the estimated 46 million turkeys per year for Thanksgiving alone, you can join celebrity activists in signing the Turkey-Free Pledge here.
