Cactus leather could be the future of sustainable and cruelty-free fashion

Mexican based entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez have created a plant-based leather, made out of cactus plants.

After two years of research and development, the duo was able to produce a material which mimics the technical specifications of the fashion, leather goods, furniture and even automotive industries, all without using animal skin. As a result, their brand Desserto was born.

Dessertos vegan leather is not only a cruelty free alternative, but it is also free from toxic chemicals, phthalates and Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In addition, the fabric is partially biodegradable.

Speaking to Fashion Union, the pair stated: “The idea of using this raw material was conceived because this plant does not need any water to grow, and there is plenty of it throughout the Mexican Republic.”

“Also, symbolically, it represents all of us Mexicans and everybody knows it. Besides, to be able to incorporate this material to various industries, it is essential to count on a stable, abundant supply of raw material”.

This plant-based replacement to animal skin leather means that there is less harm to cows and other animals, as well as fewer environmental impacts from its production.
