Burger King UK predicts 50% of its menu will be plant-based by 2031

In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, Burger King U.K. has recently announced that it will be adding more plant-based options to its menu.

The burger chain currently only offers one veggie option, the Vegan Bean Burger, though will be launching a plant-based alternative to its chicken ‘Royale’ burger in the coming weeks.

It is hoped that by increasing the amount of vegetarian and vegan options available, sales of their beef options will slowly decrease.

Despite being known for their beef burgers, the fast-food chain will also stop selling several of their beef based items altogether. Within a decade, it is predicted that up to 50% of Burger King U.K.’s menu could be plant-based.

Burger King UK’s CEO Alasdair Murdoch told i news:  “A new plant-based Whopper would appear on menus in the coming weeks as restrictions lift, alongside a plant-based ‘Royale’ burger. Meat-free nuggets are also in the pipeline.”

“When we bring in a plant-based product… there is probably an equal and opposite reaction where we are taking something else off,” he said. “Are there going to be less meat products? Ultimately, you would say yes.”

However, Mr Murdoch said that the chain doesn’t expect to ditch beef completely, despite its negative environmental impact.

“We know the direction of travel, we are embracing the direction of travel and we are trying to get ahead of it,” he said. “But we are also still very proud of our beef.”
