Boiling live lobsters could soon be made illegal in the UK

The cruel practice of boiling lobsters alive could be banned in the UK as a new Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill is passing through the House of Lords which outlines greater welfare rights for crustaceans and molluscs.

Invertebrates such as lobsters, crabs and squid currently have no legal protection from being boiled alive, despite making up over 90% of all animal species. This is largely due to the common belief that these animals lack feeling and therefore this killing method does not cause pain.

However, lawmakers in the UK are making amendments to the bill so that the sentience of invertebrates is recognised and legally protected. These animals would have to be stunned or frozen before the boiling process.

Crustacean Compassion is an organisation that campaigns for the humane treatment of crustaceans in the UK. Co-Director Maisie Tomlinson told The Times: “It is wonderful to hear that the government is planning to support the inclusion of decapods and cephalopods in the sentience bill.”

She added: “There is more than enough evidence for the ability of these sensitive, captivating creatures to feel pain and suffer. They undergo appalling treatment in the food industry.”
