Billie Eilish ensures a fur free future for Oscar De La Renta

Vegan singer Billie Eilish stunned viewers at the 2021 Met Gala in a beautiful gown designed by Oscar de la Renta. The nude tulle dress, complete with a 15-foot train, may have fit the artist like a glove, but it did come with conditions. Eilish would only wear the design if the fashion brand would change their policy and stop selling fur.

Luckily for the brand and animals everywhere, Oscar de la Renta’s chief executive, Alex Bolen, agreed to the change. This new policy is promising. Although the brand hasn’t shown fur in runway shows in years, Bolen had long resisted change, resulting in fur products still being sold in-store.

Though the brand had received pressure from both consumers and even Annette de la Renta, Oscar de la Renta’s widow, to terminate the sale of fur, Eilish was the first person to convince Bolen. Eilish, the youngest person ever to co-chair the Met Gala, told the New York Times that it is “shocking that wearing fur isn’t completely outlawed at this point in 2021.”

Eilish’s team made it clear that the singer refused to work with brands who still sold fur. With the 19-year-old’s influence being so strong, the fashion brand made a wise decision in agreeing to her terms.

“I’m honoured to have been a catalyst and to have been heard on this matter,” Eilish said in the New York Times.
