Bill to end whale and dolphin captivity in Canada passed through to House of Commons

Animal-rights lawyer Camille Labchuk took to Instagram yesterday to applaud her followers for their help in passing a landmark bill set to end whale and dolphin captivity in Canada.

According to Labchuk, who appeared to be overwhelmed with joy, it was the actions of individuals that sealed the deal at yesterday’s fateful meeting.

“I’m in the committee room where the fisheries committee just met on Bill S-203, and I have amazing news,” she said.

“We won! They passed it without amendments. All of the phone calls and emails that you guys made — some 9,000 plus of them — paid off.”

Looks like the Internet’s good for something (besides cute cat pics) after all — especially given that, according to Labchuk, things were looking dicey even on the day.

“Up until moments before the meeting began, we were told that there would be amendments and we would lose,” she explained to her followers.

“I walked in here fully expecting that we would walk out in defeat, and instead we’re walking out in victory. So thank you for everything that you did. This victory belongs to you — and the whales!”

Next, the bill will be passed to the House of Commons for a final vote.

You can follow Labchuk and her work with legal organization Animal Justice — which aims to change the game for Babes and Willys alike — through both her Instagram, and the Animal Justice website.
