Bill Gates urges wealthy nations to cut out beef

Philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft Bill Gates is urging wealthy countries to cut out beef. Citing beef as environmentally destructive, he suggests those countries move towards plant-based options or even lab-grown meat alternatives.

In his new book, How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, Gates discusses solutions to the climate crisis. To promote the book, he discussed what we need to do to save the planet with MIT Technology Review. In this conversation, he suggested rethinking global food systems.

Gates was asked if he believed every single country would be able to make the switch to beef alternatives. In response, he said, “I don’t think the poorest 80 countries will be eating synthetic meat. I do think all rich countries should move to 100-percent synthetic beef.”

Taste shouldn’t be a factor, according to Gates: “You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time.”

However, Gates did express concern over whether or not lab-grown meat will be commercially viable. Still, he praised Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods for having “a road map, a quality road map and a cost road map, that makes them totally competitive.”
