Barcelona’s first vegan fast-food restaurant opens

Chuga Libre, which translates to “Liberated Lettuce,” has recently launched, making it Barcelona’s first vegan fast-food restaurant. At the moment, due to COVID-19, they are only open for delivery.

The idea behind Chuga Libre came about because two vegan friends noticed there were not enough fast and convenient vegan options in their area. The friends, Ken and Francis, both have experience working with food and restaurants: Ken previously ran a restaurant that catered to blind people in Madrid, while Francis created vegan diet plans for athletes.

Though vegan restaurants exist in Barcelona, none are fast-food establishments. As such, Chuga Libre will serve fast-food meals that are prepared the same day and made from vegetables. In addition to vegetables, menu items feature tofu, vegan cheese, and soy protein.

The duo behind Chuga Libre has two main goals. The first is to provide ethical fast-food options for vegans. The second is to “show everyone that it is possible to have food that tastes as good as what you are currently eating, even better.”

Though Chuga Libre is currently only open for delivery, the team has launched a Kickstarter to raise funds so they can expand their business. This will include opening a brick-and-mortar location and expanding their menu. Chuga Libre also hopes to help develop the local vegan community and provide assistance to animal welfare organizations, sanctuaries, and people in need.
