Animal rights groups in Greece call for pet protection

Yvonne O'Halloran

Over 140 prominent individuals and animal rights groups have called on Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to deliver on his promises to protect pets. This comes after a large number of attacks and killings of puppies have occurred throughout the country.

Their complaints come in the form of an open letter, which refers to a pledge Mitsotakis made in September 2019. Although a series of these vicious attacks continued, no attempts to increase penalties upon animal abusers have been made.

In their letter, they requested that future legislation separate pets from livestock animals, as domesticated animals have been the primary targets of recent attacks. As such, they want the Interior Ministry to have jurisdiction over drafting any laws on this matter, instead of sharing the responsibility with the Ministry of Agricultural Development.

Municipal authorities, who the Interior Ministry has power over, would be responsible for enforcing pet protection laws. Ideally, animal rights groups would be consulted before enacting any new legislation.

Currently, the pet protection law has penalties of up to 10 years in jail for violators, but the letter was unclear on what other changes were desired.
