A meat-based Christmas dinner produces double the emissions of a vegan version

Yvonne O'Halloran

Did you know that 40% of UK households this year are skipping Turkey for Christmas? Though it has long been a tradition to have turkey and ham for many of us at Christmas, things are beginning to change. This is largely due to activists and undercover video footage that’s showing us the horrors of factory farming for animals.

The environmental impact is also evident when you consider that a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings for a family of six emits around 23.5 kilograms of CO2e which equates to the amount of carbon dioxide a car emits when driving 78.5 miles according to the Humane Society International. By contrast, a vegan nut roast dinner with all the vegan trimmings for a family of six emits 9.5 kilograms of CO2e, equivalent to driving 31.6 miles, less than half the emissions!

There are so many plant-based alternatives now with large supermarket chains like Marks & Spencers, Tesco, SuperValu and Aldi selling vegan nut roasts and other vegan eats for a delicious plant-based Christmas. There are also many recipes online where you can find yummy alternatives if you would rather cook from scratch, here is a great Christmas beet wellington that tastes delicious.
