Newfoundland and Labrador set to ban plastic bags
B’ys, the word is in. Newfoundland and Labrador is set to issue a province-wide ban on plastic bags used in retail.
Yeah, that’s right. Next time you’re goin’ for a rip past the ol’ Timmy Ho’s to pick up a case of that sweet, sweet Pineapple Crush, you’re gunna want to bring a tote.
Okay, okay. Enough’s enough. We’re just joking around, sorry. Not everyone in Newfoundland talks like that — but the law is real.
The province’s government announced on Tuesday morning, that within six to 12 months, plastic bags will be a thing of the past at Newfoundland and Labrador shops. So, that should be about when spring arrives.
Kidding, again. We know there’s no spring in Newfoundland. Just mud.

In all seriousness, the (very real) ban in the (truly delightful) province (filled with the nicest people you’ll ever meet) was born from a desire to minimize waste.
“To protect the environment and improve the waste management system, we have introduced amendments to the legislation that will allow us to draft regulations to ban the retail plastic bag,” said Environment Minister Graham Letto in a statement.
This will mark the second province-wide ban on plastic bags, following that on Prince Edward Island, which will come into effect later this year.
Looks like the islanders know what’s up, folks. And here we were thinking Toronto was the centre of Canada.
Another joke.
(Sorry.)
