Joey Carbstrong exposes UK’s pork industry in a new documentary-Pignorant
Well-known vegan activist Joey Carbstrong has exposed the UK’S pork industry during footage taken over a three year investigation into a documentary called Pignorant. Joey was inspired by his love for pigs to make the film. His mission was to investigate ‘the truth behind bacon’.
Around 88% of farmed pigs are gassed with high concentrations of carbon dioxide, with similar numbers in other countries around the world.
“Being asphyxiated to death with CO2 is one of the worst ways to die imaginable,” Rory Cockshaw, campaigner at Viva!, told Plant Based News. “That feeling of burning from the inside out, lungs rasping for air that isn’t there, is appalling to even consider.
“But this is how an overwhelming majority of pigs in the UK die – suffocated to death in a dark, grimy pit filled with a heavy gas that suffocates them to death over the course of multiple minutes.”
This form of torture is incredibly inhumane and cruel. The gas forms an acid on wet surfaces it touches, including eyes, lungs, and the throat. It was believed to take around 60 seconds to render the animal unconscious, but Joey’s video evidence showed a pig still kicking after more than three minutes.
Produced by Askew Pictures and directed by Carbstrong, the documentary is focused around how he and the undercover animal rights investigator Dan Sheppard secretly recorded footage of the pigs agonisingly dying inside a gas chamber of a slaughterhouse in Manchester, in the North of England.
In the documentary, Carbstrong invested a factory farm that was keeping pigs in North Yorkshire, and a also a ‘free-range pig farm’ in East Anglia. Though the entire documentary is eye-opening, the free range farm investigation may be one of most revealing parts of this documentary.
Pignorant is now available to watch on Amazon Prime.
